costa rican bird

in 2007 i took a crocodile river trip outside jaco beach, costa rica. here’s a cattle egret perched on a piece of wood, looking for lunch. thanks to gerald lawley for identifying the bird.

    Tom, looks like a cattle egret to me. It is a member of the heron family. It only existed in Africa until about the late 19th century, then made its way to South America and has made its way to our country – mostly in the southern part. I saw pelnty of these birding in Alabama and Florida. Many times they are in fields of cattle – often perched on the back of a cow.
